1. Watch the Sunset from Playa Holbox ♥️ Must See

One of the first things I did after arriving in Holbox was head straight to Playa Holbox, and as luck would have it, I arrived just in time to catch my first sunset, and I always make it an evening ritual to come on this beach and enjoy the sunset every day afterward.

As the sun hovers along the horizon, you will find both locals and tourists, begin settling in along the shoreline, some sitting at beachside bars others lying on the sand or sitting on the wooden benches and docks that stretch out into the water. Everyone seemed to stop what they were doing for a moment just to watch the sky turn into shades of orange, pink, and purple. It was incredible.

I recommend arriving at least 30–45 minutes before sunset so you can find a comfortable spot, grab a drink or some food from a nearby beach bar, and enjoy the whole experience from start to finish. I couldn't have asked for a better first impression of Holbox than watching such a magical sunset on my first day. It was truly a sight to behold!

2. Walk Along the white sandy beach of Playa Holbox 👍 Must Do

During the day, ideally in the morning when the weather is cooler and there are fewer people around, I recommend going for a walk along the beautiful stretch of Playa Holbox. It is one of my favorite things to do in Holbox and a great way to get acquainted with the island.

The beach here is exactly what you imagine when you think of a Caribbean island, with soft white sand stretching for kilometers, crystal-clear turquoise water that is begging you to swim, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it the perfect spot for a relaxing morning stroll.

As you walk along the shoreline, you will pass by some of the island's most beautiful beachfront resorts, boutique hotels, and beach clubs. Many of them have restaurants and beach bars where you can stop for a drink, grab some food, or simply relax in a hammock while enjoying the incredible ocean views.

You can even walk all the way to the end of the beach linem and go into the ocean and walk along its shallow crystal-clear waters and sandbanks stretching out into the sea all the way to Playa Mosquito, which I will go into details in the next section.

You can spend half a day or even the entire day exploring the beach if you take it slow and stop at one of the many beach bars and resorts along the way. Keep in mind that there is barely any shade along the beach, so it can get extremely hot during the late morning and afternoon, which is why I recommend going early. You don't have to walk the entire stretch, but even a short stroll in the morning will allow you to experience the beauty of Holbox and understand why so many travelers, include myself, consider it a true island paradise.

3. Walk on the Shallow Sand Bank All the Way to Punta Mosquito

As mentioned in the previous section, one of the most unique experiences you can have in Holbox is walking along the shallow sand banks toward Punta Mosquito. Unlike a typical beach walk, this route takes you out into the crystal-clear turquoise waters, where you can walk for a long distance through the calm Caribbean sea while surrounded by incredible views in every direction.

To get to the sandbank, you will have to wade through waist-deep water from this spot, so be prepared to get wet. I recommend wearing swimwear or quick-drying clothes and leaving anything you do not want to get soaked back at your hotel. Avoid bringing expensive electronics or valuables unless they are properly protected with a waterproof bag.

I recommend going in the morning when the sun is not as intense and the tide conditions are more comfortable. Take your time, enjoy the scenery, and don't forget to look around, you may even spot birds, starfish, and other wildlife along the way.

4. Hang Out at Playa Cocos

If you are looking for a quieter beach experience away from the busier areas of Holbox, head to Playa Cocos. Located on the western side of the island, this beautiful stretch of beach offers a much more peaceful atmosphere, with soft white sand, shallow turquoise water, and fewer crowds compared to the main beach area.

Playa Cocos is a great place to slow down and spend a few hours doing absolutely nothing. You can swim in the calm, shallow waters, relax under the sun, or simply sit on the beach and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. There are also a few small beach bars and restaurants nearby where you can grab a drink or some food while taking in the ocean views.

You can easily reach Playa Cocos by bicycle, golf cart, or on foot if you are up for a longer walk along the beach. It took me about 45 minutes to walk fron Downtown Holbox to Playa Cocos. It's a pretty straightforward walk and very easy to do,. I recommend visiting in the late afternoon when the temperature cools down, or come late at night to see the bioluminescence.

5. Experience the Bioluminescence (best on moonless nights)

One of the most unique things to do in Holbox is experiencing the island's famous bioluminescence at Bioluminiscencia. On the right night, these tiny marine organisms will create a magical blue glow when disturbed, making the waves sparkle as you move through the water. The best time to see it is during a moonless night when the sky is completely dark and there is less light pollution.

However, I visited Holbox in April, and unfortunately, my experience was not as impressive as I had hoped. I arrived at around 10 PM and stayed until midnight, but I barely saw anything. The only thing I noticed was a tiny sparkle in the water, which I didn't even realize was the bioluminescence at first. For hours, I thought it was a reflection from nearby artificial lights or even a flicker from the stars because it was so subtle. It looked nothing like the incredible photos you often see online, and I left feeling a little disappointed.

That being said, it is important to remember that bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon and its visibility depends heavily on the season, weather conditions, water quality, and other environmental factors. My visit may simply not have been during the best time of year to experience it.

You can also join a guided bioluminescence tour, but personally, I would only recommend it if you are already interested in a night kayak or stargazing experience. Since there is no guarantee that the glow will be visible on any given night, the tour can sometimes turn into more of a stargazing trip instead. If you do decide to go, check the moon phase beforehand and aim for the darkest night possible to maximize your chances. You can book the tour here.

6. Explore Downtown Holbox

While Holbox is best known for its beaches and natural beauty, don't miss the chance to spend some time exploring Downtown Holbox. The town itself is small and easy to walk around, with colorful streets, charming cafés, local restaurants, and vibrant murals painted across walls throughout the island.

One of the best places to experience the local side of Holbox is Central Park, the heart of the town where locals often gather. During my visit, I saw the park come alive with community activities almost every evening, including aerobics sessions, sports competitions, and locals hanging out together. It was a great reminder that Holbox is not just a tourist destination but also a real island community where people still live, work, and enjoy their everyday lives.

I recommend spending an evening walking around downtown, grabbing some local food, checking out the murals, and sitting at the park for a while. Don't just stay inside your resort or spend all your time at the beach. Holbox is so much more than that, and exploring the streets will give you a glimpse into what life is like for the locals who call this island home.

7. Eat Tacos at Antojitos Kanasin 🥘 Place to Eat

If you want to experience authentic Yucatecan street food in Holbox, make sure to stop by Antojitos Kanasin. During my stay, my friends and I ended up coming here almost every evening, slowly working our way through the huge variety of local dishes on the menu. We tried everything from classic tacos to Yucatan specialties like panuchos, sopes, salbutes, tortas, chalupitas, and many more.

We tried so many of these delicious varieties that even my Mexican friend from Saltillo had not tried all of these Yucatecan dishes before, and somehow we managed to discover and taste them all here. The food is affordable, delicious, and about as authentic as it gets.

Antojitos Kanasin is open daily from 7 PM to 11 PM, and you will often see plenty of locals eating here, which is always a great sign when looking for good food. If you are tired of expensive tourist restaurants in Holbox, which there are plenty of, and want to try something genuinely local, this is one of the best places to eat!

8. Enjoy Holbox Nightlife

Despite being a small and laid-back island, Holbox has a surprisingly fun nightlife scene. It is not the kind of place with massive clubs or wild parties like Cancún, but instead, it has a much more relaxed and local atmosphere where people gather, listen to music, and simply enjoy the night together.

One of the best places to experience the nightlife is The Hot Corner, where live music brings the streets to life every night. From around midnight onward, you will find people gathering around the corner, dancing to local bands playing upbeat Mexican music, and enjoying the atmosphere together. The best part is that you don't even have to pay an entrance fee or buy an expensive drink to enjoy the music, you can simply stand outside, join the crowd, and dance the night away.

During my visit, my friends and I had an incredible time here, spending our nights dancing, and enjoy the music, in between walking along the beach at night and spotting racoons roaming all over 😅. Beyond The Hot Corner, Holbox also has other fun nightlife options, including a small beer garden, karaoke bars, and more.

If you are looking for a great night out in Holbox, be sure to check out The Hot Corner around midnight and go from there. The live music usually starts around 11 PM and continues well past midnight, so grab a drink, join the crowd, and enjoy the lively island atmosphere!

9. Go on a Three Islands Boat Tour

If you have a day to spare, you can go and experience the natural beauty around Holbox by joining a Three Islands Boat Tour. This half-day adventure takes you away from the main island to explore some of the area's most beautiful natural spots. Most tours include stops at Yalahau Lagoon, Isla Pasión, and Isla Pájaros, giving you a chance to swim in crystal-clear waters, walk along pristine sandbanks, and spot local wildlife.

The first stop is usually Yalahau Lagoon, a natural freshwater spring where you can take a refreshing swim surrounded by lush vegetation. You will then continue to Isla Pasión, a small, peaceful island known for its beautiful beaches and shallow turquoise waters, before heading to Isla Pájaros, a protected bird sanctuary where you can observe a variety of birds from designated viewing platforms without disturbing their habitat.

It's a great day out on the water and allows you to experience the variety of ecosystems and scenery that you might not be able to see if you only stay on the island. If you have a day to spare and are interested in exploring Holbox beyond the main island, you can book the tour here.

10. Swim with Whale Sharks (June–September)

One of the most unforgettable experiences you can have in Holbox is swimming alongside whale sharks, the largest fish in the world. Despite their enormous size, these gentle giants are completely harmless, and getting the chance to see them up close in their natural habitat is a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The whale shark season around Holbox runs from mid-May to September, with the best chances usually between June and September. During this time, these incredible creatures gather in the waters north of the Yucatán Peninsula to feed on plankton.

A tour like this one usually starts early in the morning and takes you out into the Gulf of Mexico, where you will search for whale sharks while also having the chance to spot other marine life like manta rays, dolphins, and sea turtles. The tour includes snorkeling equipment, a bilingual guide, breakfast, lunch, and fresh ceviche.

The experience can take up most of the day, but it is absolutely worth it if swimming with whale sharks is on your bucket list. Since these are wild animals, sightings are never guaranteed and tours are dependent on weather and ocean conditions. I recommend adding an extra day or two to your Holbox itinerary so you have some flexibility in case your tour needs to be rescheduled.

When to Visit Holbox?

Holbox is a year-round destination thanks to its warm tropical climate, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. If you are looking for sunny weather, calm seas, and the best beach conditions, the dry season from December to April is the ideal time to visit. Expect warm temperatures, low humidity, and plenty of sunshine, although it is also the busiest time of the year.

If your goal is to swim with whale sharks, plan your trip between June and September. During these months, the gentle giants migrate to the waters north of the Yucatán Peninsula, making Holbox one of the best places in the world to see them. This period also coincides with the rainy season, so expect occasional afternoon showers and higher humidity.

I visited Holbox in April, and the weather was excellent throughout my stay. Most days were sunny with very little rain, making it perfect for relaxing on the beach. However, April isn't the best time to see whale sharks or experience the island's famous bioluminescence, and flamingo season is only just beginning, so sightings can be limited.

If you are visiting Holbox primarily for a beach getaway, April is an excellent time to go. If wildlife is your main priority, you will be better off visiting between June and September. Like much of the Yucatán Peninsula, the afternoons can get quite hot, so I found it best to plan outdoor activities for the morning or late afternoon and relax during the hottest part of the day.

How to Get to Holbox?

By bus: If you are traveling from elsewhere in the Yucatán Peninsula, whether it is Mérida, Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or Valladolid, you should be able to catch a direct ADO bus to Chiquilá, the ferry port for Holbox. There are also shared shuttle services available, but I found ADO buses to be much more comfortable, reliable, and spacious for long-distance travel. You can book the bus here.

If you are traveling from Bacalar, you will first need to catch an ADO bus to Cancún. From Bacalar, the journey takes around 6 hours. There is a morning departure at around 8 AM, arriving in Cancún at approximately 1:30 PM, giving you enough time to catch an afternoon bus to Chiquilá. You can book this leg here.

From Cancún, you can transfer to another ADO bus bound for Chiquilá, which takes approximately 2.5 hours. There is usually an afternoon departure at around 2:30 PM, arriving at the ferry terminal at approximately 5 PM, just in time to catch one of the frequent ferries to Holbox. You can book this bus here.

By ferry: Once you arrive at the ADO bus terminal in Chiquilá, you will find ticket kiosks for the island's two ferry operators, 9 Hermanos (Blue) and Holbox Express (Red). The services are virtually identical, with one company operating the red ferries and the other the blue ferries. They alternate departures every 30 minutes from 6 AM to 9:30 PM daily, so you can simply buy a ticket for whichever ferry is leaving next. Tickets cost around 330 MXN per person each way. No need to book in advance.

After purchasing your ticket, it is just a short walk from the bus terminal to the ferry pier. The crossing to Holbox takes around 30 minutes, and before you know it, you will be stepping onto one of Mexico's most laid-back islands.

Once you arrive at Holbox Ferry Terminal, you can easily walk to most accommodations in town. If your hotel is farther away, golf cart taxis are available at the pier to take you anywhere on the island.

How to Get around Holbox?

By walking: If you are staying around downtown Holbox, walking is the easiest and most enjoyable way to get around. Most restaurants, cafés, shops, and the main beach areas are only a few minutes away from each other.

By bicycle: Renting a bicycle is one of the best ways to explore beyond the town center. You can easily cycle to places like Punta Cocos and along Playa Holbox while enjoying the island's relaxed atmosphere. Keep in mind that most roads in Holbox are unpaved and covered with sand, so cycling can require a bit more effort than usual 😅. You can rent a bike from this shop, with prices starting at around 150 MXN (9 USD) for 7 hours, 200 MXN (12 USD) for 12 hours, and 250 MXN (15 USD) for a full day.

By golf cart taxi: For longer distances or if you have luggage, golf cart taxis are the easiest option. You will find them waiting around the ferry pier and throughout town. Prices are usually fixed depending on the distance, with short rides costing around 50–100 MXN (3–6 USD).

By golf cart rental: You can also rent a golf cart if you want the freedom to explore the island at your own pace. You can rent one from this shop, with prices starting at around 23 USD per hour, 66 USD for 4 hours, or 150 USD for the full day from 9 AM to 6 PM.

How Many Days to Spend in Holbox?

How Many Days to Spend in Holbox?

I recommend spending at least 3 days in Holbox to fully experience what the island has to offer without feeling rushed. Here's a suggested itinerary for you:

• Day 1: Arrive in Holbox, settle into your accommodation, and spend the afternoon exploring downtown, and watching the sunset at Playa Holbox.
• Day 2: Join a Three Islands boat tour to visit Isla Pájaros, Isla Pasión, and Yalahau Cenote. Spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the beach or exploring more of the island by bicycle.
• Day 3: Start the day early with a visit to Punta Mosquito, then spend the afternoon swimming, relaxing by the beach, or exploring Holbox's colorful streets and local restaurants.

If you are visiting between June and September and want to swim with whale sharks, I recommend adding an extra day to your itinerary to allow some flexibility. If you are short on time, you can also swap Day 2 with a whale shark tour and save the Three Islands tour for another visit.

Is it Safe in Holbox?

Holbox is one of the safest destinations in the Yucatán Peninsula and is generally considered very safe for travelers, including solo travelers. The island has a relaxed, small-town atmosphere, and violent crime involving tourists is extremely rare.

Most visitors spend their days walking, cycling, and exploring the island at all hours without encountering any issues. During my visit, I even walked from Holbox to Punta Cocos alone at around 10 PM to see the bioluminescence and walked back around 1 AM without any problems.

That being said, it is still important to take normal precautions. Avoid leaving valuables unattended on the beach, and keep an eye on your belongings in crowded areas. Since Holbox is surrounded by nature, you should also be mindful of mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season, and bring insect repellent if you plan to explore mangroves or spend time outdoors after sunset.
