San Juan del Sur is one of my favorite beach towns in Nicaragua, thanks to its laid-back vibe, crescent-shaped bay, and easy access to some of the best beaches along the Pacific coast. After coming from the touristy Tamarindo (also known as Tamagringo ๐ ) in Costa Rica, San Juan del Sur felt like heaven on earth. Itโs cheaper, more authentic, and more relaxed. It was definitely a much-needed change for me.
I spent my time here slowing down, exploring the coastline, and getting into a simple routine of beach days and relaxed evenings in town. While itโs become a well-known stop on the backpacker trail, it still manages to feel local in many parts, especially once you step away from the main beachfront strip.
In this guide, Iโll cover everything you need to know to plan your trip, including the best things to do, how to get around, where to eat, and practical travel tips to help you make the most of your time in San Juan del Sur.

8 Best Things to Do in San Juan del Sur
1. Go for a stroll along Playa San Juan del Sur
- ๐ Location: Playa San Juan del Sur [Map Link]
The best way to kick off your trip to San Juan del Sur is by taking a stroll along its beautiful crescent-shaped beach. Once you've settled into your accommodation, head over to Playa San Juan del Sur and take in the laid-back atmosphere that has made this little surf town one of my favorite beach towns in Nicaragua.
I had just come from Tamarindo in Costa Rica before arriving in San Juan del Sur, and the difference was like night and day. While Tamarindo is extremely touristy, so much so that many people have nicknamed it "Tamagringo", San Juan del Sur is much quieter, more laid-back, and feels far more authentic, as locals still live and work around the beach area.
The beachfront is lined with restaurants, cafรฉs, bars, surf shops, and colorful fishing boats bobbing in the bay. It's a lively place throughout the day, but I especially enjoyed walking here in the evening when the temperature cooled down and people gathered along the beach to watch the sunset.
- Nalu Nalu Hostel (Budget)
- Tapihouse San Juan Del Sur (Mid-Range) ๐ Top Pick
- Hotel Victoriano (High-End)
And my god, the sunsets here are incredible! I never experienced a single disappointing sunset the entire time I was here. Every evening was absolutely breathtaking, and I made sure not to miss a sunset walk along the beach every day I stayed in San Juan del Sur. You are going to love it!
Where to Stay in San Juan del Sur?
2. Watch the Sunset at Christ of the Mercy
- ๐ Location: Christ of the Mercy [Map Link]
- ๐ Opening Hours: 7 AM - 6 PM
- ๐ฐ Entry Fees: 150 NIO (~4 USD)
Talking about sunsets, if you're staying in San Juan del Sur for several days, make sure to hike up to Christ of the Mercy for sunset one of the evenings you're here. The statue stands high above the bay, overlooking the entire beach town, and from up here you'll get to see the beautiful crescent-shaped beach in all its glory.
The hike itself takes around 20โ30 minutes depending on your pace, and while itโs a bit steep in parts, itโs manageable for most people. You can also take a tuk-tuk or taxi up if you prefer to save your energy for the views at the top, but for me, the walk was part of the fun.
You can walk directly from San Juan del Sur town either along the road or along the beach. I recommend the latter for a more scenic experience. Once you reach the foot of the cliff, you can cross onto the road through this gate, where it merges into the main road, and from there you can begin the hike up to Christ of the Mercy.
Try to arrive about 30โ45 minutes before sunset so you have time to find a good viewing spot and enjoy the changing colors of the sky as the sun dips behind the ocean. This is one of the most popular sunset spots in San Juan del Sur, so expect other travelers and locals to be there as well, but the atmosphere is part of the experience.
Bring water, wear decent walking shoes if you're hiking up, and don't forget your camera. Watching the sunset from here is easily one of the highlights of visiting San Juan del Sur. The monument is open from 7 AM to 6 PM every day, and the entry fee is 150 NIO (4 USD).
3. Spend a Day Beach Hopping
- ๐ Location: Nica Moto Rental Shop [Map Link]
- ๐ฐ Motobike Rental Fees: 20 USD/day
If you have a day to spare, one of the best things you can do here is rent a motorbike and go beach hopping. You can rent a motorbike from Nica Moto Rental Shop for around 20 USD per day and explore nearby beaches such as Playa Hermosa, Playa Marsella, and more. Each beach has its own vibe, from surf-friendly breaks to quiet, secluded stretches of sand, and itโs easy to mix and match a few in a single day depending on how much time you have.
Playa Maderas is the most popular surfing beach, with consistent waves, laid-back beach bars, and surf schools for beginners. Playa Remanso is a great alternative if you're just starting out, offering smaller and more manageable waves. If you're looking for something quieter, Playa Marsella offers a more relaxed atmosphere with calm waters that are better for swimming than surfing. Playa Hermosa is the most well-known long beach in the area, often used for surf camps and beach clubs, while Playa Yankee feels more remote and untouched.
If you don't want to drive yourself, you can also visit some of these beaches using a shared daily shuttle service operated by Casa Oro Eco Hostel. The service runs fixed routes to nearby beaches like Playa Hermosa and Playa Marsella several times a day. Fares start at around 4 USD one way, with round-trip tickets costing approximately 7 USD for Playa Marsella and 12 USD for Playa Hermosa. You can either go to the hostel to reserve your spot or message them on WhatsApp to book in advance.
4. Learn to Surf at Playa Hermosa
- ๐ Location: Playa Hermosa [Map Link]
If you're looking to learn how to surf while in San Juan del Sur, Playa Hermosa is one of the best places to do it. The beach is long, spacious, and much less crowded than Playa Maderas, which is perfect for beginners who want more room to practice without constantly dodging other surfers.
There are several surf schools and camps along the beach where you can take lessons for all levels, from complete beginners to more advanced surfers looking to improve their technique. Most lessons include board rental, basic instruction on land, and in-water coaching to help you catch your first waves safely.
The waves here are generally more forgiving than at some of the other nearby surf spots, and the wide sandy beach makes it easy to take breaks between sessions. Even if you're not surfing, it's still a great place to relax, watch the surfers, or spend a quiet afternoon away from town.
5. Wander Around San Juan del Sur Town
- ๐ Location: San Juan del Sur Town [Map Link]
Despite my praising of all the beaches around San Juan del Sur, San Juan del Sur Town itself isnโt too shabby either, and I really enjoyed walking around its vibrant streets. The main streets are small and easy to explore on foot, and you can see some really pretty colonial-style architecture scattered throughout the town.
Along the waterfront, you'll find a mix of casual restaurants, beach bars, surf shops, and cafรฉs, all facing the crescent-shaped bay. Itโs a lively area throughout the day, especially in the late afternoon when people start gathering for sunset and evening drinks.
In the quieter side streets, you'll come across local events, small family-run eateries, and everyday life unfolding away from the tourist strip. It's a nice contrast to the beachfront and gives you a better sense of the town beyond just the tourist areas. Don't just stay at the beach while you're here, take some time to explore the town and interact with the locals as well. You'll find that Nicaraguans are some of the friendliest people in the region.
6. Eat Local Food at La Reina del Sur
- ๐ Location: La Reina del Sur [Map Link]
- ๐ Opening Hours: 11 AM - 8 PM approximately
- ๐ฐ Entry Fees: 120โ140 NIO (~3-4 USD)
One of my favorite restaurants in San Juan del Sur is La Reina del Sur, a local spot right on the coastal road next to the beach. Itโs a homemade buffet-style gallo pinto restaurant where you can choose one or two protein options, vegetables, and other sides for a very affordable price starting at around 120 NIO (3 USD).
I often find myself here every evening, ordering my usual pescado (fish) dish for around 3 USD, and just sitting back to watch the sunset from the restaurant while enjoying the sounds of birds chirping in the evening. They can be extremely loud, and some do enjoy stealing unattended food, so be careful ๐ .
The restaurant is open daily from approximately 11 AM to 8 PM, and the price range is around 120โ140 NIO (3โ4 USD) per gallo pinto dish. Itโs one of my favorite places in San Juan del Sur, and if you're looking for a delicious and affordable local meal, you canโt go wrong with La Reina del Sur.
7. Enjoy coffee/food at Ding Repair Cafe
- ๐ Location: Ding Repair Cafe [Map Link]
- ๐ Opening Hours: 7 AM - 9 PM
- ๐ฐ Entry Fees: 300โ500 NIO (~8-14 USD)
For a nice and cozy cafรฉ with a great view of the waterfront street, Ding Repair Cafe is my go-to spot. Itโs a bit on the more expensive side, with prices ranging between 300โ500 NIO (8โ13 USD) for a meal, but the quality is great and you definitely get your moneyโs worth here.
I really enjoyed stopping here for a coffee or light breakfast before heading out for the day. The vibe is relaxed, the food feels fresh and well-prepared, and it's a nice break from the more typical beach-town restaurants along the waterfront. The cafรฉ is open daily from 7 AM to 9 PM.
8. Join Sunday Funday (if visiting on Sunday)
- ๐ Location: Sunday Funday [Map Link]
If you happen to be in San Juan del Sur on a Sunday, one of the most popular backpacker events you can join is Sunday Funday. It's essentially a weekly pool party that takes you to multiple hostels and beachside venues around town, with music, drinks, and a very social atmosphere throughout the day.
The event usually starts in the afternoon and includes transport between locations, pool parties, games, and plenty of opportunities to meet other travelers. Itโs very popular with backpackers, so expect a lively and energetic crowd.
While itโs definitely more of a party experience than a cultural one, it has become something of a San Juan del Sur institution. If you enjoy social travel and donโt mind a big party vibe, it can be a fun way to spend a Sunday.
When to Visit San Juan del Sur?
San Juan del Sur is a great destination to visit year-round thanks to its warm tropical climate. The dry season, from November to April, is generally considered the best time to visit, with plenty of sunshine, little rain, and ideal conditions for relaxing on the beach, surfing, and watching the sunset.
If you don't mind the occasional afternoon shower, the rainy season (May to October) can also be a great time to visit. The surrounding hills become lush and green, the beaches are much quieter, and accommodation prices are often lower. Even during the high season, however, you'll likely find San Juan del Sur considerably more affordable than popular beach destinations in neighboring Costa Rica.
If surfing is your main reason for visiting, you'll generally find the best waves during the rainy season, especially between May and September, when larger Pacific swells arrive. Beginners can still find smaller, more forgiving waves throughout the year at beaches like Playa Remanso.
I visited San Juan del Sur in March, and the weather was clear the entire time I was there. The temperature was pleasant in the mornings and evenings, but it got pretty hot from around midday until 4 PM. I often found myself escaping the heat and retreating to my air-conditioned accommodation during those hours. If you're visiting during the dry season, I highly recommend booking a place with air conditioning, you'll definitely appreciate it!
How to Get to San Juan del Sur?
From Managua: Managua is the main gateway to Nicaragua, and most people who fly in will begin their journey here. From Managua, you can take a shared shuttle/private transfer, or travel by public bus to San Juan del Sur. Shared shuttles are the most convenient option, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours, while public buses require a transfer in Rivas and take around 3.5 to 4.5 hours.
For public transportation, you'll first need to make your way to Terminal de Autobuses Mercado Roberto Huembes using Aventon (iOS/Android), or Ray (iOS/Android), Nicaragua's equivalent of Uber. From there, you can catch one of the direct buses to San Juan del Sur. Buses typically depart around five times a day between 9 AM and 5:30 PM, with one morning departure and four afternoon departures. Tickets can only be purchased with cash at the terminal, and online booking is not available.
One thing to keep in mind is that the bus terminal can feel quite chaotic, especially if you've just arrived in Nicaragua. You'll likely be approached by people offering to carry your luggage or help you find your bus. While they may seem friendly, they will expect a tip afterward. I recommend keeping your bags with you until you're ready to board the bus to avoid any awkward situations.
From Granada: Granada is one of the most common places travelers visit before heading to San Juan del Sur. Shared tourist shuttles run daily between the two destinations and take around 2.5 to 3 hours. You can find shared shuttles here. If you're traveling on a budget, you can also take a public bus to Rivas before transferring to another bus bound for San Juan del Sur.
From Leรณn: If you're coming from Leรณn, shared shuttles are the easiest option and usually take around 5 to 6 hours. You can find shared shuttles here. Public transportation is also available, but you'll need to transfer buses in both Managua and Rivas, making the journey considerably longer.
From Ometepe Island: You can also go with a shared shuttle service, which you can book here, but be sure to get the right ferry so you arrive in time for your shared shuttle pick up. You can take the ferry from Moyogalpa to San Jorge, and then you should find many shuttles waiting in the parking lot there. Find yours and you should be on your way. The entire journey typically takes 2 to 3 hours, depending on ferry schedules.
From Costa Rica: San Juan del Sur is one of the easiest destinations to visit from Costa Rica. Most travelers cross the border at Peรฑas Blancas, which is only about 45 minutes away. Direct shuttles operate from popular destinations like Liberia, Tamarindo, La Fortuna, and Monteverde, which you can find here, or you can cross the border independently and continue by bus or taxi from Rivas.
This is how I entered Nicaragua, and I used a shared shuttle service from Costa Rica. The experience was smooth overall, with the driver coordinating with their associate on the Nicaraguan side, who guided us through the border crossing without any issues.
The only hiccup I encountered was with my visa. Due to the February 2026 changes to Nicaragua's visa policy, citizens of many countries now need prior approval from a Nicaraguan consulate before they can obtain a visa on arrival. Thankfully, I received my approval just in time, but since the new process was still being implemented, it took immigration more than 90 minutes to issue my visa-on-arrival stamp. ๐ฌ Fortunately, the shuttle driver waited for me, so I didn't have to arrange alternative transportation.
If you're planning to cross the border, be prepared for possible delays. I've heard the busiest time is early in the morning when the border first opens, with some travelers waiting 2 to 3 hours in the heat. We arrived at around 10 AM, and while I had to wait for my visa, the immigration lines themselves were relatively short.
How to Get Around San Juan del Sur?
By Walking: San Juan del Sur is a small beach town, and if you're staying near the town center, you can easily get around on foot. Most restaurants, cafรฉs, bars, supermarkets, and the main beach are all within walking distance of one another.
By Motorbike: If you're planning to visit beaches outside of town, such as Playa Maderas, Playa Hermosa, or Playa Remanso, renting a motorbike is one of the best ways to get around. I recommend Nica Moto Rental Shop, which has a good selection of motorbikes starting at around 20 USD per day. Traffic around San Juan del Sur is generally light, making it a relatively easy and enjoyable place to ride. Just keep in mind that some roads leading to the beaches are unpaved and can become rough during the rainy season, so drive carefully.
By Shuttle Services: If you'd rather not drive yourself, you can rely on shuttle services to get around. One of the most popular options is the shuttle operated by Casa Oro Eco Hostel, which runs fixed routes to nearby beaches like Playa Hermosa and Playa Marsella several times a day. Fares start at around 4 USD one way, with round-trip tickets costing approximately 7 USD for Playa Marsella and 12 USD for Playa Hermosa. You can go to the hostel and reserve your spot or you can Whatsapp them and book from there.
How Many Days to Spend in San Juan del Sur?
I recommend spending at least 2 days in San Juan del Sur. That gives you enough time to explore the town, visit one of the nearby beaches, hike up to Christ of the Mercy for sunset, and enjoy the town's laid-back atmosphere without feeling rushed.
- Day 1: Explore San Juan del Sur, stroll along the beachfront, enjoy the cafรฉs and restaurants, and hike up to Christ of the Mercy in the late afternoon for sunset.
- Day 2: Choose one of the nearby beaches, such as Playa Maderas or Playa Hermosa, and spend the day relaxing, surfing, or enjoying one of the beach clubs.
- Day 3 (Optional): Visit a few more beaches along the coastline, there are several to choose from, before spending another relaxing evening in town.
Is it Safe in San Juan del Sur?
Yes, I found San Juan del Sur to be a safe place to visit. During my time there, I walked around town during both the day and evening without any issues, and the atmosphere felt relaxed and welcoming. As with any popular tourist destination, it's still important to use common sense and keep an eye on your belongings, especially around the beach, bars, and on public transportation.
If you're planning to explore the nearby beaches, avoid leaving valuables unattended while swimming, and don't leave anything visible inside a parked scooter or rental car. If you're heading back from the beach after dark, it's a good idea to take a taxi rather than walking along isolated roads.
Overall, I never felt unsafe in San Juan del Sur. The locals were friendly, fellow travelers were easy to meet, and as long as you take the usual travel precautions, you should have a safe and enjoyable visit.
