One of the daily rituals I often find myself doing, is to visit several of my favorite adventure and backpacking blogs and read up on travel stories, plan my future trips, and lose myself in the world of travel where anything is possible.
As some of you may know, I live and breathe travel and have been doing so for more than a decade. In a good year, I would travel to over 10 countries, spending at least 2 weeks in each country, and spend months exploring all the interesting things this world has to offer.
These travel blogs have become the main sources of my inspiration, and I am here to share this list with you. From the OG travel blogger like Nomadic Matt to the lesser-known blogs, here are the 11 best adventure and backpacking blogs you should follow.
1. Nomadic Matt
Nomadic Matt is the OG backpacking blog and one of the first travel blogs I have ever discovered. Matt is a backpacker through and through, and he has been backpacking around the world for the last 11 years while sharing tips and tricks on how to travel the world cheaply on his blog.
He even wrote a book on "How to Travel the World on $50 a Day" for those who are looking to travel the world inexpensively. His blog is home to some of the most comprehensive travel guides from around the world.
He also writes a ton about his life as a nomad in the past 10 years, sharing thoughts, life lessons, and many more travel-related topics. Nomadic Matt is one of the first backpacking blogs I would visit whenever I want a quick shot of inspiration to plan my future trips.
2. Goats On the Road
Goats On The Road is another one of my favorite travel blogs. I followed them way back when they were writing about Central Asia, and their travel guides helped me tremendously in completing my journey in Central Asia.
Nowadays, they continue to provide us with new travel guides, as well as sharing their incredible journey on how they have created such a successful travel blog. This blog is extremely valuable for those who are looking to start their own adventure and backpacking blogs.
If you are looking for a travel blog that has a ton of comprehensive travel guides that you can browse through, or if you are looking to start a backpacking blog of your own one day, be sure to drop by Goats On The Road and check out their awesome content.
3. The Broke Backpacker
The Broke Backpacker is probably one of the largest backpacking resources you could find out there. With over 2,000 articles dedicated to helping budget travelers and backpackers travel the world, Will, the founder of The Broke Backpacker, has created something incredible here.
On The Broke Backpacker, you can find super-detailed backpacking resources on how to travel cheap, far, and wide. Will and his team tend to focus on true adventure countries like Pakistan, Iran, and Kyrgyzstan, although thereโs also lots of first-time backpacker resources on there too, plus detailed gear guides if youโre looking to equip yourself for a big adventure.
It is one of the first blogs I would visit if I wanted to plan a backpacking trip somewhere. Will and his writers are great at writing pieces that are well-thought-out and extremely honest, which really helps keep their articles grounded and relatable. If you are new to backpacking, be sure to check The Broke Backpacker out before planning a new trip.
4. Against The Compass
Against the Compass is one of my favorite adventure and backpacking blogs that I often visit when I want to explore unusual places like Iraqi Kurdistan or Syria. The blog focuses on providing useful and actionable information for those of us who have a penchant for non-typical destinations such as Syria, Iraq, and Iran, among others.
Joan, a travel blogger from Spain, has visited some truly incredible places that one can only dream of, such as Syria and Iraq. Based on his real-life experiences, he has written some of the most comprehensive travel guides that are actually attainable and anyone can follow. This is what I like most about Against the Compass.
His travel guides are extremely detailed and have helped me tremendously in planning my trip to places like Azerbaijan. If you are looking for a travel guide to help you travel to unusual places, you can never go wrong with Against the Compass.
5. Lost With Purpose
Lost With Purpose is another great travel blog that focuses on providing detailed information about unusual travel destinations, such as Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan, that you can follow.
Alex is an excellent backpacker and a great writer, and when you put those 2 qualities together, you often get interesting travel stories to read, like her adventure and mishap on the Pamir Highway in Tajikistan, which reminded me of my time in the Pamir where I experienced my first symptoms of altitude sickness.
Her articles are a blend of useful information and interesting travel stories, while also raising awareness on many issues that traveling as a solo woman poses. She stands firm and stays true to what she believes in, which is not so easy to come by nowadays with all the focus going towards getting the highest number of likes possible and going viral.
If you are looking for a great adventure blog with interesting stories in interesting places or if you are looking for guidance on how to travel the world as a solo female traveler, Lost With Purpose is the place to be.
6. Nomadasaurus
Nomadasaurus is Australia's top adventure blog run by a married couple, Lesh and Jazza, and their team. They have been writing comprehensive travel guides from over one hundred different countries and all seven continents since 2013.
On Nomadasaurus, you will find a ton of extremely detailed travel guides you can choose from to help you plan your next trip. When I run out of ideas of places to visit, I will often go on Nomadasaurus and just browse through their travel guides, looking for ideas.
They have done their fair share of incredible adventures in the past 10+ years, traveling from Thailand to Turkey by land and hitchhiking around Mongolia for 7 days. If you are looking for a great adventure blog to find new ideas on adventurous places to visit, be sure to drop by Nomadasaurus.
7. Laidback Trip
I ran into the Laidback Trip adventure blog a while ago when I was looking for information on New Zealand. When I read their in-depth itinerary for New Zealand for the first time, it made me curious about all the hikes I didn't do the last time I was in the country. One thing led to another, and I am now a huge fan of their extremely well-written hiking and adventure content.
Laidback Trip is run by an adventurous couple, Lucie & Martin, and their blog is mostly focused on hiking and nature-related content, which I love. They have many well-written hiking guides for South America and New Zealand, and it is one of the first blogs I would visit if I am planning to go on a hiking trip somewhere.
If you are looking for an adventure blog with a great collection of in-depth hiking guides and beautiful photography for your next journey, be sure to drop by Laidback Trip and check out their content.
8. Stingy Nomads
Stingy Nomads is another adventure blog that I often browse through for ideas when I want to plan a hiking trip somewhere. The travel blog is run by a couple, Campbell and Alya, and they are themselves avid hikers who like to tackle long-distance treks across the world while sharing useful information for us to plan our own hiking trips.
They even completed the spiritual Camino de Santiago long-distance trek, which is a modern-day pilgrimage trail that traverses from Portugal to France through Spain. Stingy Nomads has one of the most comprehensive collections of travel guides to help you complete the trek, which is something I have always wanted to do.
They also have a ton of hiking guides for places like Patagonia, on which I heavily relied when hiking around the wonderful region. The adventure blog is a great resource for those of you who like the outdoors and enjoy hiking. If you are planning to do some hiking in Europe or South America, be sure to browse through all the hiking guides over at Stingy Nomads to help make your trip possible.
9. Wander Lush
Wander Lush is an excellent travel blog run by Emily, an adventurer from Australia who has made the wonderful city of Tbilisi, Georgia her home. The blog is, as you guessed it, focused on the Caucasus region, which consists of Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, and all the beautiful things you can do there.
When I was planning my journey in the Caucasus, her blog helped me tremendously in planning and discovering cool things to do there. Wander Lush also has content from less-trodden places like the Balkans, the Middle East, and more for you to discover.
If you are looking for unusual places with few tourists to visit for your next trip, there is no better place to start planning your journey than on the Wander Lush travel blog.
10. Journey Era
Another travel blog to follow is Journey Era, an adventure blog run by a young Australian adventurer, Jackson Grove, who spends years traveling the world, hiking mountains, jumping off cliffs, and participating in all sorts of extreme activities.
His photography skills are also exceptional, and his passion for hiking often takes him to some of the most beautiful places in the world. In his blog, you will find several hiking guides from around the world, but my favorites are all the hiking guides he shared for Switzerland and Indonesia.
I spent my fair share of time hiking around Switzerland, but after looking through all the hiking guides on Journey Era, I realized I barely scratched the surface here. I can't wait to go back to Switzerland, follow his guide, and hike some more.
If you are looking for a great adventure blog to plan your hiking trip, most notably, Switzerland and Indonesia, do not forget to drop by Journey Era and browse through their hiking guide collection of ideas.
11. We Seek Travel
Here's a new addition to the list this year: We Seek Travel, an outdoor adventure blog that focuses on hiking, trekking, and island-hopping trips. The blog offers a wide range of content from destinations such as South East Asia, Australia, the Himalayas, and Africa.
Olly, the person behind We Seek Travel, is a photographer first and foremost. Therefore, all of his adventures are beautifully captured and accompanied by detailed information based on real-life experiences, which will come in handy for those looking to follow in his footsteps.
He has solo-cycled New Zealand, fought Muay Thai in Thailand, driven a Tuk Tuk across Sri Lanka, sailed the East Coast of Australia in a self-built yacht, bussed around India, and lived in a van during the Tasmanian winter. So, if you are looking to challenge yourself on your next trip, be sure to check out We Seek Travel!
