How Difficult Is the Pacaya Volcano Hike?

The Pacaya Volcano hike is a very easy hike and is suitable for almost anyone with a reasonable level of fitness. Compared to Acatenango, this hike is significantly shorter, less steep, and reaches a much lower elevation. In fact, it was so easy that it didn't actually prepare me for what awaited me on Acatenango the way I thought it would 😅.

The trail climbs gradually through farmland and forest before opening up onto Pacaya's vast volcanic landscape. There are a few steeper sections near the top, but nothing too strenuous, and most people can reach the viewpoint in around 1.5–2 hours at a normal pace.

I actually hiked Pacaya a few days day before Acatenango, hoping it would prepare me for the much tougher climb ahead. While it was a fun hike with incredible volcanic scenery, it turned out to be much easier than I expected and definitely did not prepare my knees for the onslaught that was Acatenango 🤣.

If you are looking for a rewarding volcano hike without committing to an overnight trek, Pacaya is an excellent choice. It offers spectacular volcanic landscapes, unique lava fields, and incredible views, all without requiring the extreme physical effort needed for Acatenango.

My Pacaya Volcano Hiking Experience

Getting to Pacaya

Since Pacaya is only about an hour from Antigua, I booked a random tour from Nuevos Horizontes Travel in Antigua the day before, and while it was more affordable than booking online, no one speaks English, so if you prefer an English-speaking guide, go for this tour instead.

After I booked the tour for 150 GTQ the day before, they gave me the meeting point and time, which was at the front of this church at 6 AM. The meeting point varies between tour companies, so be sure to confirm the exact location and time with your operator the day before.

After everyone was here, we drove for about an hour and a half to Pacaya Volcano National Park, where we met our guide, paid the park entrance fee of 100 GTQ (14 USD), and had a quick briefing before starting the hike. There were several local vendors around the entrance selling drinks, snacks, walking sticks, and rain ponchos in case you forgot anything.

There are also toilets at the park entrance, but none once you begin the hike, and it will take around 3 hours in total to reach the viewpoint, so make sure you are prepared before setting off. Once everyone was ready, we passed through the park entrance and began our ascent up one of Pacaya.

Hiking Through the Forest

From the park entrance, the trail climbs gradually through a forest of small trees, which although blocks the wind, it still leaves pretty much the entire trail exposed to the sun, so make sure you put on sunscreen before the hike! Along the way, you'll often find local vendors selling cold drinks and snacks, as well as horse owners offering rides to anyone who wants a little help getting up the mountain.

As we gained elevation, the trees gradually began to thin out, revealing more of the surrounding landscape. Every now and then, we stopped to catch our breath and enjoy the views before continuing higher. The pace was very relaxed,which makes it easy for everyone in the group to keep up.

Walking Across Ancient Lava Fields

After about an hour of hiking, the landscape changed dramatically. The forest gave way to vast fields of black volcanic rock, almost as if we were stepping into another world! Right in the middle of it all, you will find a small hut, which turns out to be a gift shop!

Yes, there is actually a gift shop up here where you can buy souvenirs made from volcanic rocks, run by two friendly craftsmen with a surprisingly large collection of handmade items, from jewelry and keychains to magnets. They are, of course, a little more expensive than what you would find in Antigua, but hey, it's the memory that counts!

Right next to the gift shop, you will notice a peculiar-looking pile of rocks stacked to resemble an oven. That is exactly what it is, as there is a pizza shop up here where you can try pizza cooked using heat from the volcano. How cool is that? Of course, it is expensive and takes some time to cook, but at least you know you have the option here 😉.

From here, it was only a short walk to the viewpoint, where you will be treated to incredible views over the surrounding lava fields, with Pacaya Volcano towering above you. If the sun is out, you will see steam rising from these lava fields, creating a quite a wonderfully dreamy sight to see!

Roasting Marshmallows on Volcanic Heat

One of the coolest things you can do here is roast marshmallows using the natural heat coming from the volcanic rocks. After walking across the lava fields, our guide took us to this area where heat escapes from the ground and gave us a bunch of sticks and marshmallows to toast right on top of the hot volcanic surface.

We were definitely having a blast finding our own vents and grilling our own marshmallows. That said, there were many leftover sticks scattered around the area, which was unfortunate, as some people simply threw them away and left. Please do not be like them, bring the sticks back with you and dispose of them properly once you are off the volcano.

Once everything is done, your guide will let you know when it is time to head back down. You will follow the same trail back to the entrance of the park, which takes about an hour, before the shuttle takes you back to Antigua. Depending on traffic, which can be quite bad during the day, you will likely arrive back in town around 2 PM, marking the end of your Pacaya Volcano hike.

Which Tour to Pick for Hiking Pacaya Volcano?

Unlike Acatenango, where choosing the right tour company can make a huge difference, most Pacaya tours are fairly similar. They all include round-trip transportation from Antigua, a guide, and a half-day hike up the volcano, which makes it one of the easiest day trips you can do from the city.

I booked the tour from a random tourist agency my friends found, I think it was Nuevos Horizontes Travel, and we got the tour for 150 GTQ (20 USD), which was significantly cheaper than booking one online, but no one speaks English, as it is a local run company and you would only find local tourists in the group. Thankfully, my friend Oana, speaks Spanish so she was able to translate most things for us.

If you prefer an English-speaking guide and a group made up mostly of English-speaking travelers, I recommend this tour. It is a little more expensive, but that is typical for tours with English-speaking guides. The experience is otherwise very similar, including round-trip transportation from Antigua and, if you're lucky, a free marshmallow or two to roast over the volcano's heat. Just note that the park entrance fee of 100 GTQ (14 USD) is usually not included in the tour price.

When is the Best Time to Hike Pacaya?

The best time to hike Pacaya Volcano is during Guatemala's dry season, from November to April, when you are more likely to enjoy clear skies and unobstructed views of the surrounding volcanoes. The trail is also drier and less slippery, which makes it a much more enjoyable experience. I wouldn't know as it was raining on me almost the entire time 😅.

Despite me hiking Pacaya during the dry season, it rained on us for almost the entire hike, and we didn't get much of a view until we started making our way back down, when the rain finally stopped and the clouds began to clear.

Be sure to pack a lightweight rain jacket for the hike, just in case! Even if you visit during the rainy season, don't be deterred. The weather can change quickly, and you might still be rewarded with clear views by the end of the hike as it did for me.

How Much Does Hiking Pacaya Cost?

Safety Tips for Hiking Pacaya Volcano

Although Pacaya is one of the easiest volcano hikes in Guatemala, it is still an active volcano, so it is important to stay on the designated trail and follow your guide's instructions at all times. The volcanic landscape can change over time, and certain areas may be closed due to increased volcanic activity.

Wear proper hiking shoes with good grip, as parts of the trail are covered with loose volcanic gravel and rocks, which can be slippery, especially on the descent. Bring plenty of water and wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. Much of the upper part of the hike is exposed with very little shade.

Also, consider bringing a lightweight rain jacket, as it can rain at any time out here. I was there during the rainy season, and it rained on us all morning. It wasn't until we started making our way back down that the rain finally stopped and the sky cleared up. Just my typical luck with the weather 😅.

Lastly, be aware of the horses on the trail. Local guides often offer horse rides to hikers, and they frequently pass along the narrow paths. Step aside when they approach and always give them the right of way for everyone's safety.

What to Pack for the Pacaya Volcano Hike

Compared to Acatenango, packing for Pacaya is much simpler. Since it is only a half-day hike, you only need to bring the essentials. The trail is mostly exposed with very little shade, so protecting yourself from the sun and occasional rain is more important than packing warm clothing.

Is Pacaya worth visiting?

Yes, Pacaya Volcano is worth visiting, especially if you are short on time or looking for an easier alternative to Guatemala’s more challenging volcano hikes. Unlike Acatenango, which requires an overnight trek and several hours of steep climbing, Pacaya can be completed in half a day and is accessible for most travelers with a moderate level of fitness.

The highlight of Pacaya is not the summit itself, but the experience of walking across the lava fields, feeling the heat rising from the volcanic rocks, and seeing the dramatic landscape shaped by past eruptions. You can even roast marshmallows over geothermal heat from the volcano, which makes it a fun and unique experience.

That said, if you are an experienced hiker looking for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, Pacaya may feel less impressive compared to Acatenango. Think of Pacaya as an easy volcano experience, while Acatenango is the ultimate volcanic adventure.

Can you see lava on Pacaya Volcano?

It depends on the volcano’s current activity. Pacaya is one of the most active volcanoes in Guatemala, but visible lava flows are not guaranteed. During periods of higher activity, you may be able to see glowing lava streams or molten rock flowing down the slopes, especially around sunset or after dark.

I was there when the volcanic activity had already subsided for quite some time, so I didn't see any lava. However, even without visible lava, I still think the hike is absolutely worth it. The volcanic landscape, black lava fields, steaming rocks, and panoramic views of nearby volcanoes like Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango are not sights you get to experience very often.

If seeing active lava is your main goal, check recent conditions before booking and manage your expectations, as volcanic activity can change quickly.

Should I do Pacaya or Acatenango?

It depends on what kind of experience you are looking for:

Choose Pacaya if:

• You only have half a day available
• You want an easier volcano hike
• You are traveling with limited hiking experience
• You want to walk on lava fields and roast marshmallows
• You prefer comfort over a physically demanding adventure

Choose Acatenango if:

• You want Guatemala’s most epic volcano experience
• You want to camp overnight above the clouds
• You want to see eruptions
• You enjoy challenging hikes and dramatic landscapes

For most people, Acatenango is the more unforgettable experience, but it is also much MUCH harder. The climb is steep, the altitude is challenging, and the overnight camping conditions can be cold and uncomfortable for some. Pacaya is a great alternative if you want a taste of Guatemala’s volcanic landscape without committing to a two-day adventure.

If you have enough time and are physically prepared, I would choose Acatenango first and Pacaya second, or better yet, do both, which is what I did since I had plenty of time in Antigua. But if you only have one day or prefer a more casual adventure, Pacaya is still one of the best day trips from Antigua.
