The precaution applies to all genders. It's very safe in the city during the day, especially in the tourist area. At night, the party area is fine to walk around but avoid walking around quiet streets. Also, stick to Uber for taxis, they are cheaper and no need to negotiate prices :). My friend (She's Argentinian) traveled around Colombia alone and she didn't have any problem with it except a few catcalls which happen in many big cities around the world.
