Hello I'm loving your post! I was wondering if you could give me some advice on places to stay in Kyoto. Currently I'm debating between Kyoto Station or the Gion area, which do you think would be most convienent? Thank you!
I believe Gion is a good place. Everything is almost in walking distance, and you are right there at the center of everything, shopping streets and all. :)
No, I was there during the Gion Matsuri and they celebrated the festival on the main street called Shijo Dori just heading up to Shinto Shrine. Try to align your days to match the Gion Matsuri date and you should see the same. I hope this helps! :)
I've only ever visited Gion once. I didn't know about the celebrations it looks like so much fun! Four days of celebration sounds simply magical. Did you find you spent much while you experienced the festival?

I didn't know about it either when I arrived so it was a great surprise to see all the streets filled with people one evening haha. I did spent a lot on street food as there were tons of them on the street and they all look delicious. If you are careful with what you spend on food, it shouldn't be too expensive. :)

Hi Pete. Since you are withdrawing cash in advance from VISA internationally, is the rate good or bad?
Not the best I would say. I can't remember the rate but I was desperate so I didn't mind at that point. :)
